With the title STAGES ON LIFE'S WAY, Kierkegaard gave a new phrase to many languages and offered through his delineation of aesthetic, ethical, and religious studies a tentative solution to a major conundrum of both modernist and postmodernist sensibility—the question of human identity. Though the title may suggest a Bildungsroman, the volume is more an arabesque, a collection of apparently separate works followed by a commentary and interpretation of the collection by the editor. The authors of this present collection of previously unpublished essays address, analyze, praise, criticize, and puzzle over the issues of STAGES ON LIFE'S WAY, its relation to the whole of Kierkegaard’s authorship, to Kierkegaard’s own life, and to the difficult task of making sense of our own selves in the various stages on life’s way.

This narrative provides a comprehensive history of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The book concludes that race, the Civil Rights movements, and black and white philanthropy had much affect on the development of these minority institutions. Northern white philanthropy had much to do with the start and maintenance of the nation’s HBCUs from 1837 into the 1940s. Even from 1950 to 1970, HBCUs depended upon financial support of philanthropic groups, benevolent societies, and federal and state government agencies, but the survival of HBCUs became dependent mostly on their own creative responses to the changing environment of higher education and have helped to shape our culture and society.

 

From the first conflict under General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Murfreesboro in 1862 to the desperate and often brutal battles with Union cavalry in the Carolinas during 1865, the 2nd Georgia was almost constantly in action. While the 2nd Georgia fought in such famous campaigns as Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Knoxville, Resaca, Atlanta, and Bentonville, they also participated in deadly encounters at Farmington, Mossy Creek, Noonday Creek, Sunshine Church, and Waynesboro. Many of these conflicts are obscure to all but the most ardent Civil War historians. Returning in paperback, this is the first regimental history of a Georgia Cavalry regiment ever published. The 2nd Georgia served under both Nathan Beford Forrest and Joe Wheeler, and campaigned not only on home turf, but literally on the farm acreages of many of the unit's members.
